Dame Agatha Christie, the world's most famous mystery and crime writer, was born in Torquay and lived much of her life in the area.
Follow the Agatha Christie Mile, a walk that leads around Torquay seafront, featuring just some of the locations linked with her life, each marked with a plaque and including the only bust in the world of the most published author of all time.
Visit the Agatha Christie Gallery at Torquay Museum where, with items made available by her family, a fascinating display shows pictures and tells the story of Agatha's childhood in the area and, later in life, her happy times at Greenway estate their summer residence.
A must for Agatha Christie fans is a visit to Greenway Gardens, now run by the National Trust. Already a prominent house with a renowned botanical collection, Greenway became a perfect second home for Agatha Christie and her second husband the renowned archaeologist, Max Mallowan. They inveterate collectors and the house was filled with collections of antiquities gathered during their extensive travels.
Agatha Christie never worked at Greenway but she would read her current manuscript to the family before it was published. The gardens are open from March to October and the house is due to open to the public in 2009, following a period of restoration.
