The nation’s passion for football extends down to the beautiful English Riviera – with our very own Torquay United Football Club.
Founded in 1899 by a group of school leavers under the guidance of Sergeant Major Edward Tomney, Torquay United Football Club now play in the Conference Premier League. Nicknamed ‘The Gulls’, they have played their home matches in a 6,200 capacity stadium in Plainmoor since 1921.
So why not soak up some local atmosphere by supporting ‘The Gulls’ during your stay? Find out all the fixtures here. There are some wonderful local accommodation providers close by the grounds, including The Downs Hotel in Babbacombe, Osborne Apartments or Pilgrims Rest Luxury Cottages.
Have a kick around
For those who want to play football when you are here on holidays, there are plenty of large open spaces, so bring a football and pop over to Torre Abbey Meadows, Cockington Country Park in Torquay, Paignton Green just behind Paignton Sands, or Brixham’s Furzeham Green.
And it's so easy to get to each town. Why not make it an experience and take a ferry across the Bay? You can catch a Western Lady Ferry across from Torquay to the quaint fishing port of Brixham or from Paignton, why not try the Paignton Pleasure Cruises and Ferry to explore Brixham and Torquay.
For a wider range of family adventures, why not book a trip to the 46 acre site PGL Barton Hall, Torquay. This family centre has fantastic on site activities, outdoor swimming pool, zip wires, giant swings and even a lake!
Head to the bar
After the match, celebrate the victories or lift your spirits at a range of bars such as Rock Garden, Las Iguanas and Twenty1 in Torquay. In Paignton, head to Grand Central, Harbour Light or local’s favourite The Spinning Wheel. In Brixham, try the Prince William, the Manor, or for a proper local’s pub, the Queen’s Arms.
