About
THIS EVENT IS PART OF THE ENGLISH RIVIERA WALKING FESTIVAL
It may surprise you to know Agatha Christie was an avid sea swimmer and would regularly visit beaches on the English Riviera. Before the first World War, when Agatha was a teenager, these beaches were segregated. The nearest Ladies’ bathing beach to Agatha’s home was Beacon Cove (also known as Agatha’s beach) which is where she learned to swim. In those days, ladies would change in Bathing Machines before and after entering the water, which proved very challenging, when the Bathing Machine was pulled over the rocks and stones! This tour takes us to Beacon Cove and onto the Gentleman’s bathing beach at Peak Tor Cove. We finish at Meadfoot Beach, another favourite with both Agatha, her sister Madge and her nephew Jack. Bring your swimwear and we’ll take a dip at the beaches where Agatha once swam.
The walk/swim will be led by Matt Newbury, author of the enormously popular Wild Water Swimming books and also the Creative Director of the Agatha Christie festival.
Hear how Agatha saved her nephew from drowning
Enjoy a walking along a stunning stretch of coast path between Torquay harbour and Meadfoot Beach.
Learn about the history of sea bathing and some of the quirky characters it attracted.
And after the swim, pick up a warming cup of hot chocolate from the beach cafe at Meadfoot.
