You are here: Tourist Info & Maps > English Riviera Visitor Information Centre > Dog Friendly English Riviera
One of the great joys of the English Riviera is its stunning and unspoilt coastline. Along a 22-mile stretch, there are more than 20 beaches and secluded coves to explore with your four-legged friends. Going away for your holidays can often mean leaving one of the most important members of the family behind, but the English Riviera always extends a warm welcome to all our visitors and that means pooches, too. That is why you’ll find plenty of dog friendly information here.
Dogs have always played an important part of life in the Westcountry. Many of our canine friends still play a vital role in the economy of the region, particularly in the farming, policing and leisure fields. That is why we tend to be much more accommodating towards guests who don’t want to leave their beloved pet behind when they come down to visit us. The result is plenty of pet friendly hotels, bed and breakfasts and camping sites, where your dog will receive just as warm a welcome as you do!
Many resorts ban dogs from beaches completely. Not us. Here on the English Riviera we know that dogs enjoy playing in the sand as much as the kids do, so beaches across the English Riviera are open to dogs from 1st October to 30th April. During the summer months there are plenty of beaches that allow dogs including Babbacombe Beach, Livermead Sands in Torquay, as well as other sandy destinations around the Bay. (see list below).
The towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, which make up the English Riviera welcomes all responsible dog owners, but you need to know which beaches you can take your pooch to and when. They must also be kept on a lead on promenades and if your dog is excitable and does not respond to your commands, it should be kept on a lead on the beach as well. Poop Scoop bylaws operate all year round.
As well as having impressive beaches and fantastic coastal walks (The English Riviera forms a key section of the South West Coast Path), we also know that fun and food with your dog is just as important. Some attractions and eateries welcome dogs of all shapes and sizes and with so many outdoor eating areas you and your dog can enjoy your time here on the English Riviera.
Permitted (Scoop bylaws operate all year round). Further information can be found via http://www.torbay.gov.uk/asb-environment-and-nuisance/dogs/dogs-on-the-beach/
