The English Riviera is a designated UNESCO Global Geopark, one of only seven in the entire UK and 140 in the world. This stunning area is globally recognised for its unique geological landscape and significant cultural heritage and is one of Earth's extraordinary places.
The English Riviera's fertile land and bountiful coastline means we produce some of the finest food and drink in the UK. Lured by the exceptional local ingredients, we’re also home to some of the country’s top artisan producers. So if you love high quality, authentic food, you can take your pick when you visit the English Riviera.
The freshest, locally caught fish & seafood
Look out across the sparkling blue of The Bay and you’re likely to spot a fishing boat or two bobbing along with a trail of seagulls hovering behind. And in the bustling fishing port of Brixham you can watch the boats coming and going, unloading their haul. Alongside the glamour of Torquay and the fun of the beach, the English Riviera is also home to England’s biggest fish market by value. Whilst much of the freshly caught fish and shellfish continues its journey to the finest restaurants and fishmongers across the country, some stays right here in Torbay to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
Award winning cafes and restaurants using the best local produce
There’s a strong ethos amongst our restaurants and cafes to use fresh local produce where possible. The award winning The Elephant restaurant in Torquay even has its own farm in Brixham, where it grows its own essential supplies to guarantee freshness and availability.
Enjoy local food straight from the grower
If you’re planning on cooking up a feast of local food for yourself during your stay, you can buy quality local food and drink direct from the growers at local farmer’s markets in the towns. Pop into Occombe Farm Shop where 75% of products are regionally sourced from the best the West Country has to offer and their proceeds go towards caring for Torbay’s special green spaces. Or head to Churston Farm Shop on the road to Brixham where 55% of everything sold in this popular farm shop is sourced from within the local area and you’ll find their delicious own grass-fed 28-day lamb and 28-day hung Aberdeen Angus beef on sale. If you’re visiting the area and want an authentic Devon food experience delivered direct to your door, it’s worth bearing in mind that Churston Farm Shop can also make up personalised hampers.
Special brew
Torbay is also home to Bays Brewery. This family-run business has a reputation for brewing a perfect pint and has won countless awards for their range produced in Paignton. Even the malted barley is sourced locally in nearby Newton Abbot. You’ll find brews with typically Devonshire names, including Topsail and Devon Dumpling on sale in pubs and restaurants across Torbay and beyond, or pop into the brewery to pick up some bottles. Or if wine is more your thing, you’ll not be disappointed by Sharpham Vineyard, located on the banks of the River Dart. Producing classic English wines, you can take a tasting tour and stock up direct at the vineyard, where you’ll also find traditionally produced Sharpham cheese on offer.
