The English Riviera is amazingly beautiful and one of the most naturally inspiring places to visit in England, with stunning coastal views, a mild and sunny climate and unique outdoor experiences that will simply take your breath away.
Discover 22 miles of coastline set around what residents and visitors fondly describe as ‘The Bay’ with award-winning sandy beaches and captivating rock formations forming part of our UNESCO Global Geopark. A network of winding footpaths along the dramatic coastline are part of the famous South West Coast Path, popular with ramblers, bird watchers, photographers and dog walkers alike.
The English Riviera is renowned for its iconic palm trees, Mediterranean micro-climate and continental-style waterfront promenades with restaurants and cafes providing stunning alfresco dining experiences. The mix of elegant Victorian architecture, quaint fisherman’s cottages and contemporary buildings create a colourful and relaxing atmosphere.
The English Riviera’s incredible natural setting is a haven of tranquillity and certainly one of Earth’s extraordinary places. With designated UNESCO Global Geopark status, the area is internationally recognised for its unique geological interest and is one of only eight global geoparks in the UK and 140 in the whole world!
Carbon Neutral
Since 2008, the English Riviera has been working together towards minimising carbon dioxide emissions. Our local authority, Torbay Council, has set up a range of measures to ensure that Torquay, Paignton and Brixham are doing everything we can to reduce our impact on climate change. These measures include a wide variety of things, from the implementation of new walking and cycling routes, installing new energy-efficient LED lighting, plans to create two new solar farms, and a commitment to maintain and enhance Torbay’s woodlands, trees and green spaces.
Communities throughout the English Riviera are passionate about our area. As an UNESCO Global Geopark, our environment has incredible geology and rare and protected wildlife. There are regular beach cleans, farm shops with no-waste refillable stations, and businesses working to make a difference to this wonderful place that we live in.
As a visitor to the English Riviera, there are plenty of ways that you can enjoy the Bay in a sustainable way. With plenty of public transport, you could consider leaving your car behind, enjoy our locally-sourced produce or take part in a peaceful stand-up paddleboard session to take in the natural environment in an environmentally friendly way.
