About
Brixham is fast becoming the cultural hub of Devon as incredible art murals take over the town.
From the harbour, through the town and up to Bolton Street there are over 15 full size murals painted on the side of buildings.
Commissioned by both independent traders and Brixham Future, the artworks will form part of a walking trail through Brixham. A copy can be viewed here.
The colourful murals have been painted by various artists including Mrs Murals, Urban Gypset and Brixham based illustrators Flossy and Jim. They build on Brixham’s reputation as an arts, crafts and heritage hub and many of them are based on the town’s history.
The Angel Wings on King Street is a nod to the women of Brixham in 1866, who during the Great Gale guided their loved ones home to port by building fires on the shoreline, and pulled fisherman from wrecks of vessels that had washed ashore. 100 lives were lost that day, but it would have been much more were it not for the “Brixham Angels”.
On Bolton Street, you’ll find a stunning piece of art based on a depiction of Frederic Leighton's 'The Fisherman and the Syren' oil on canvas, which dates from 1856–1858. It tells the story of a mermaid who rises from the waters to complain to a fisherman that he is enticing her children to death. Gradually the mermaid's own beauty lures the fisherman into the water and to oblivion.
On Fore Street, you’ll find the largest concentration of murals, with a pirate, a pirate map and sailing trailers featuring the iconic Brixham red sails.
The side wall of Dobles the Jewellers in Fore Street has been decorated with a treasure map of Brixham in 1615.
These murals are a quirky addition to Brixham's quaintness and individuality, and we would highly recommend a visit to Brixham to spot these hidden gems. As well as spotting these new artworks, you’ll be spoilt with independent shops, art galleries, quality places to eat and drink and peaceful walks around the harbour.
