About
THIS EVENT IS PART OF THE ENGLISH RIVIERA WALKING FESTIVAL
Join Engagement Ranger Marije on a tour of Berry Head – a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). You will be taken to the imposing Napoleonic fortifications, before wandering onto the stunning limestone headland which pre-dates the birth of the dinosaurs by over a million years! Then it’s onto the breath-taking sea views from 60 metres up, from where there’s a good chance you will see Harbour porpoises and Common dolphins, whilst listening to the cackling laughter of the Guillemot colony. Being intimately familiar with the site, Marije will show you around this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and introduce you to the unique species of flora and fauna which thrive in this rare habitat. Marije will explain how she came to be the next custodian of Berry Head and what it takes to maintain these grasslands in top condition.
Visit the only place in the UK where you can find a unique assemblage of limestone specialist plants like Honewort, Small Hare’s-Ear and White Rock Rose
Stroll around the South Fort and North Fort, both Scheduled Ancient Monuments, ideally situated to spot marine mammals, seabirds and butterflies
Gain an insight into the challenges of being a Ranger….it’s the perfect opportunity to ask any burning questions if you feel inspired to join the conservation sector!
