About
Topper National Series - Dinghy racing, approximately 130 boats launching from the beach.
The Topper has been a mainstay of UK dinghy clubs for many years. International Olympic sailors have cut their teeth sailing a Topper. As a class we are very lucky to be part of the RYA Pathway. This provides us with part funding for high quality training for sailors – supporting their development as sailors for life.
As a class association, we provide a competitive racing series at venues across the UK. This allows the sailors to experience different types of conditions for both tidal and non-tidal sailing. Supporting the events is a great team of dedicated volunteers; providing on and off water support and advice for both sailors and parents alike.
Training and development of sailors is a key part of the class. We have ITCA (GBR) volunteer Area Representatives mirroring the RYA regions. They provide a mixture of open coaching and a racing series for sailors in those regions – all of which are available for entry through the ITCA (GBR) site.
Travelling with the Topper is a great way for parents to meet other parents from around the country, and also a great way for the sailors to make new friends. I hear many stories of friends meeting each other in later stages of their lives – for example when going to university, travelling or in their jobs.
The ITCA (GBR) is very proud of the achievements of ex-Topper sailors. Olympic Gold medalist Giles Scott first sailed a Topper, and winners of boats.com / Yachting Journalist Association Young Sailor of the Year award have also been Topper sailors.
