About
THIS EVENT IS PART OF THE ENGLISH RIVIERA WALKING FESTIVAL
Would you like to learn how to sketch from a professional artist?
Join James Murch (www.jamesmurch.com) – a semi-finalist in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, current Artist in Residence at Torre Abbey, and former Resident Artist and tenant at Cockington Court for the past four years. This walking tour offers a unique opportunity to learn from James in a location that has been instrumental in his artistic development.
At the meeting point, you’ll receive a starter sketch kit (notepad, pencil, viewfinder, and eraser). James will guide you through using the kit and share expert tips to help you capture the beauty of your surroundings. You’ll also learn techniques like squinting and using the viewfinder to simplify your view and focus on key details.
Stopping at various scenic points along the route, you’ll explore light and shade – the building blocks of great sketches – and practice capturing the natural beauty around you in the plein air tradition practiced by all the best landscape artists.
By the end of the tour, you might just discover your inner Van Gogh!
Sketch in the inspiring surroundings of Cockington Court, with its ancient arboretum, apple orchard, lakes, woodland, and sweeping sea views.
Energise your creativity with plein air sketching, working directly in the open air to capture the natural beauty of the landscape.
Gain expert guidance from James, a professional artist with years of experience in plein air painting.
Learn techniques to simplify your view and focus on light and shade for dynamic and expressive sketches.
End the tour with a well-earned drink at The Drum, a traditional English pub in the heart of the village.
If you’re hooked by the end of the tour, why not purchase your sketch kit and take up this relaxing pastime at home?
